Love Me If You Dare

I watched a movie in French last night. Well, in French with English subtitles. The subtitles come in handy since I can only follow about 60% of what is being said – especially if it is French that is not the same as the Quebec French of my youth.

Above is a pic of the two main characters as children – they start off as best friends and then it escalates into love and craziness! If you want to check it out it’s called Jeux d’Enfants or Love Me If You Dare in English.

Normally I don’t write too much about the movies I watch but I think there is something kind of interesting, intimate and special about taking in a story that is presented in a different language. It’s kind of like exchanging a very knowing glance with someone – could be a stranger or it could be someone close to you – but you know exactly what they are thinking just from the message the eyes give you.

I Say, Book Club No More!

I just bought a Blu-ray player and joined Netflix. When I set up my queue of movie selections I found that I had selected a lot of documentaries and dramas based on true events. I was a little surprised but then I thought about how my tastes had changed from fiction to non-fiction in the past few years. I guess I find it hard to suspend reality unless the writing is really superb.

I have tried and failed so many times with book clubs that it is embarrassing. But, just today I read about an idea that was very appealing. How about a monthly documentary night? You and a small group of friends get together and watch a topical movie. Wine and potluck is optional!

Here are a few more titles that will be making an appearance at my group movie night!

Holly Golightly - the Ultimate Girly Girl

Did I mention that my mom and I watched "Breakfast at Tiffany's" last weekend?  I had never seen the film before but it is iconic and watching it was one of those things I always intended to do . What I did not know was that the character of Holly Golightly is - well there is no way to put this delicately - essentially a prostitute!  I wasn't really expecting that but I did enjoy the movie.  Also, I did not know that this was THE big movie for George Peppard - who plays the male lead.  He is very handsome and plays a sensitive writer - be still my heart.

I did enjoy the movie and in spite of Holly's choice in career I identified with her.  For one thing she sprinkles french phrases into her speech, referring to one of her boyfriends/customers as "quelle rat." For another thing, she likes all things sparkly!

You know there are some things everyone should just do or experience.  Watching this movie made me think of some things all girly girls should try at least once:
  • Try some raw oysters and champagne with a man
  • Visit the Eiffel Tower
  • Take a girlfriend vacation to Manhattan
  • Buy a pair of ridiculously sexy shoes - I mean the type you can barely walk in
  • Have a hot, no strings fling on vacation

Time to get Carried Away by a Trailer!

I might love "Sex and the City" more than any other TV show that has ever aired.    I really enjoyed the first movie so I look forward to this next installment!  Hollywood.com, I heart you for providing this trailer.  I can't wait to check out the fashion and the new adventures of four of my favourite fictional heroines.

According to various quizzes I have taken over the years I am a Samantha - the results have been unanimous!  Do you know which of the girls you are?

Julie & Julia - A Micro Review

I saw Julie & Julia last night and I liked it, thank you very much snarky facebook friends. I also enjoyed the book which I read during the hot, first week of August. It was a part of my summer reading list – more on that in a different post.

There were a lot of things I enjoyed about the movie, not the least of which is the fact that it combines two things I love, food and writing. I really enjoyed some of the touching moments where we see the love story between Julia Child and her husband, Paul. However, the moment that I loved best was not in the book and while I am sure the subjects of the book and movie had many special moments, this particular moment was surely created by Nora Ephron. It was still beautiful to me.

Tall, physically awkward, yet socially charming and witty Julia is at her sister’s wedding. Her sister, even taller, also charming and witty is dancing with her new husband. Julia and Paul take the floor and dance sweetly, chin to cheek due to the height difference. The camera person sweeps out to an aerial view of the dance floor and we see Julia reach across to grip her sister’s hand for a few seconds. Both continue dancing, faces pressed lovingly to their mates but connected to each other at the same time.

It was an insignificant moment in relation to the bigger story but it made me cry. Having a sister is special. Having one you can hold on to in the most emotional moments is priceless.

If you are one of my four readers, I think you will enjoy the movie. Check it out.
